Traditionally, maps have organized and communicated the spatial understandings of the powerful--those who had the resources to survey land, claim it as their own, and then justify that claim with a map and physical force. Then, in the 1980s, as computer technology became more widely accessible, innovations like Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and the Internet helped people see the potential for maps to reflect a more diverse range of worldviews. Slowly, a practice known as participatory mapping has emerged (PGIS), through which communities and individuals--like the ISISmapping Team--are now embracing geospatial technologies to create maps that reflect previously underrepresented versions of spatial truth. The mission of ISISmapping.org is to help you map your world. We believe that maps are power, a power that should be shared by everyone.
